I like teaching the D’Nealian Style because it is easier to transition into cursive writing later.
Start with the Letter You Are Learning
Choose the letter you are working on
Practice both:
capital letter
lowercase letter
Practice 3–4 times for new letter you are introducing.
Keep it short and focused.
How to Teach Letter Writing
Build Skills Over Time
Each week:
Introduce one new letter
Practice previous letters one time
Practice the new letter 2–3 times
Focus mostly on lowercase letters
Capitals are important, but used less often in everyday writing.
Holding a pencil correctly is an important skill in these early years.
If your child is having trouble finding a comfortable, effective grip, a pencil grip can be very helpful. These are available at most teacher supply stores.
If you’re unable to find one, a limited number are also available in Mrs. Bee’s Shop.
Teaching Letter Formation
Show your child how to form each letter
Keep movements smooth and consistent
Use the same pattern each time
