Tips for Struggling Readers

Many children struggle with reading because they don’t have a solid foundation in letter sounds. The good news is that small, consistent successes can quickly build confidence and motivation.

Leann, I think this page has the potential to become one of the most important pages on your website because parents are already searching for help with struggling readers. I would make it feel less like a "tips" page and more like a roadmap.

Instead of giving parents a long list of ideas, I'd answer this question:

"My child is struggling to read. Where do I start?"

Then at the top:

If your child is struggling with reading, don't panic. Most reading difficulties can be improved by strengthening a few key skills. After teaching reading for over 25 years, I've found that these three areas make the biggest difference.

Then create three sections.

STEP 1

Build a Strong Foundation in Phonics

(This should be your biggest section because it's your specialty.)

📷 Add a picture of your puppets and phonics charts.

Explain:

Children can't become fluent readers if they don't know:

✅ Letter names

✅ Letter sounds

✅ Common phonics patterns

✅ How sounds work together in words

Then say:

One of the easiest and most effective ways to build these skills is through a daily phonics drill.

I would even put a colored box:

Mrs. Bee's Tip: Just 5–10 minutes a day of consistent phonics practice can make a huge difference.

STEP 2

Teach Children to Build and Spell Words

This section should focus on:

"Tell Me How to Spell…"

and

"Make a Word" Activities

Explain:

Reading and spelling are closely connected.

When children:

✔ Stretch sounds

✔ Build words

✔ Change one letter at a time

✔ Learn simple spelling rules

They become much stronger readers.

Then explain:

Tell Me How to Spell…

Children hear a word, stretch the sounds, and write the letters.

Make a Word

Children build words with letters without writing, allowing them to focus entirely on sounds and patterns.

📷 Add pictures of both activities.

STEP 3

Build Word Recognition Through Flash Cards and Rewards

Explain:

Once children can sound out words, they need repeated practice until many words become automatic.

Word recognition:

✔ Builds confidence

✔ Improves fluency

✔ Frees the brain to focus on comprehension

Then explain your reward system.

Children love:

⭐ Stickers

⭐ Small prizes

⭐ Earning certificates

⭐ Moving up levels

I would make this section feel encouraging and fun.

Then add a section at the bottom:

Marketing Strategy

I would place this offer:

At the top of the page

Small banner:

In the middle of Step 1

Because this is where they're learning about phonics.

Again at the bottom

Because many people don't decide until they've read everything.

Introduce puppet packets and other products

For homeschool moms, this sequence feels helpful instead of salesy. You're solving their problem first, building trust, and then introducing your products naturally.

I actually think this "Helping Struggling Readers" page could become one of the main entry points to Mrs. Bee's Learning Studio, because it directly answers the question so many parents are typing into Google: "Why is my child struggling to read, and what should I do?"
