Build an ABC Train

This activity may look easy, but many children are still learning the order of the alphabet.

When we first begin, we build the train together. Over time, your child will begin to recognize the letters and place them more independently.

How to Set It Up

  • Use a simple alphabet border or strip (often used in classrooms)

  • Cut the strip apart so each letter becomes its own card

  • Keep both uppercase and lowercase together on each card if possible

  • Mix the letters up before each activity

You can usually find these at a teacher supply store or even a dollar store.

How to Support Your Child

When your child gets stuck, offer gentle guidance:

  • “Let’s say it together… A-B-C-D-E… what comes next?”

  • “We’re looking for J… I think it might be over there…”

  • “This one looks like N… see how it has two lines?”

  • (You can even draw the letter in the air to give a clue)

How to Use the Activity

  • Begin building the alphabet train together.

  • We need the A.. here it is, can you put that one first. Next we need… Oh here is one that is in your name.

  • Encourage your child to participate, as much as possible.

  • Repeat what you have build often then continue.

Important Mindset

Help when needed, but allow your child to do the thinking.

A small amount of struggle helps build stronger learning and confidence over time.
