Building Word Fluency
Why Fluency Matters
Once your child can easily sound words out, it's time to start practicing reading those words with more fluency. The goal is to help your child recognize common words quickly and confidently so they don't have to stop and sound out every word they read.
Just a few minutes of daily practice can make a big difference.
Getting Started:
Begin with words your child already knows or can easily sound out..
A great place to gather words might be the First Grade Beginning Word List found in the Free Downloads section.
Gradually add short vowel words with blends and other phonemic patterns your child has been learning. ( slowly remove words that have become too easy for them.
Include a few Red Words in each practice session. Writing these words in red with a red marker can be helpful in the beginning.
Continue adding new words to your flash card collection while reviewing words your child has already mastered.
Keep practice short, positive, and fun. Just 5–10 minutes each day is enough to build confidence and fluency.
Make It Fun:
Practice should feel encouraging—not stressful.
Make it like a game, (give them the cards they can say you get the cards you have to help with. Count how many cards they got and give a small reward for each one ( like a penny or gold fish cracker or other treat they like. Keep it rewards small you may be giving 40 treats)
If you have more than one child practicing you can make it like a competition, the first one to say the word gets the card.
The goal is to build confidence while keeping enthusiasm alive. Praise success often.
