One of the First Steps to Becoming a Reader
Color words are some of the very first words children can learn to read automatically. Because children already know what the colors are, they can focus on recognizing the printed word instead of trying to figure out an unfamiliar vocabulary word.
As children learn to read color words, they begin to experience success. They discover that they can actually read! That confidence carries over into beginning books, writing activities, directions, games, and everyday reading.
The goal is simple: recognize each color word quickly and automatically. When children no longer have to stop and sound out these words, they can focus on understanding what they are reading.
The secret is not complicated—it's simply practice, practice, practice. Short, enjoyable practice every day will build confident readers.
More Beginning Reading practice for Kindergarten by Building Words
One of the easiest ways to help children learn to sound out words is by using individual letter cards. Instead of only looking at words on a page, children can see, touch, move, and rearrange the letters as they blend the sounds together.
Mrs. Bee's Make a Word kit is available in both physical and downloadable letter sets. The letters are color-coded to make learning easier: ( Note: copy on card stock, no need to laminate, with proper storage they hold up for many years)
Yellow = Vowels
Blue = Consonants
Children can use the letters with simple word-building mats to practice reading and spelling beginning words. As they move each letter into place, they say the sounds and blend them together to read the word.
This hands-on approach helps children understand that changing just one letter creates a new word, building strong phonics skills while making learning fun.

cat • hat • sat • map • pig • dog • sun • bed
As your child becomes more confident, they can move on to four-letter words and word families. Building words with movable letters gives children a strong foundation before they begin reading books independently.
Word Mats- easy to make, I do recommend laminating these. They are also available free with the purchase of a physical set of letters.
How to store your Make a Word letters
Each letter is stored in its own labeled bag, making it easy to find the letters needed for each lesson and keeping everything organized for years of use.
These cards are double sided-so make sure you have a printer that can print double sided. Upper case letter are on one side and lower case letter are on the other side. These cards are very useful for multiple grade. Probably the best investment and discovery I made in my teaching career.
