Welcome to Mrs. Bee's Reading Book Club
One of my favorite memories as a classroom teacher was watching children become excited about reading chapter books.
The secret wasn't giving them harder books—it was giving them the confidence to understand what they were reading.
That's why I created Mrs. Bee's Reading Book Club, with comprehension booklets for each chapter of every book and fun activity to go with the story.
Each book study follows the same simple routine. As your child completes each story, they'll build reading confidence, strengthen comprehension skills, and create a Reading Response Journal they'll be proud to look back on.
Feel free to put your own cute picture on the front. You could actually put a picture of your child on the front if you like.
To get started, you'll need just a few simple supplies.
Supplies:
A composition notebook with primary (pre-primer) paper (available at Walmart for about $3.00 or amazon) I recommend one for you and one for your child.
A copy of the featured book.
The downloadable comprehension booklet.
The downloadable activity pages for that book.
A downloadable page of dog bones or other writing prompt when needed
Scissors, glue, and a pencil, ( and sometimes colored markers and or crayons)
The comprehension booklet is printed as a double copy. One copy is for you to model with your child, and one copy is for your child to complete. Learning together helps children become confident readers.
Henry and Mudge the First Book
Reading Routine:
Read • Think • Write • Create
Follow this same routine for most books. This book has 3 chapters. I recommend reading one chapter each day. For our first books, you'll also receive a page of dog bones—one bone for each chapter in the book.
Day 1
Cut out 3 dog bones for each person, write a small number in the top corner of each bone. For example: 1…..2…..3…..
Do the Preview in the booklet
Read Chapter 1 ( you can shadow read or take turns reading you read the left page and your child can read the right page. Help with the words you know they don’t know but encourage them to read the words they do know.
Answer the question for chapter 1 in your booklet.
Write one sentence about this chapter on bone #1 (For many children—especially reluctant writers—writing on a fun shape feels much less intimidating than writing on a lined page.
Save each completed dog bone until you've finished the entire book.
Day 2
Read Chapter 2
Complete the comprehension questions
Write one sentence about this chapter on bone #2
Day 3
Read chapter 3
Complete the comprehension questions
Write 1 sentence on bone #3
Day 4
After finishing the book, open to the next clean two-page spread in your Reading Response Journal.
At the top of the right-hand page, write the title of the book.
For example:
Henry and Mudge: The First Book is a __________________ book.
(Let your child choose the describing word. (funny, dog, exciting, happy, good)
Teacher Tip: This is also a great opportunity to remind children that book titles capitalize the important words.
Glue the dog bones underneath your writing in chapter order.
Cut out the pieces and glue Mudge together.
His floppy ears may overlap a little—and that's perfectly okay!
Mudge has floppy ears! (you might have to fold his ear to fit in the book)
Glue your completed craft on the left-hand page of your Reading Response Journal.
Congratulations!
You have just completed your very first Reading Response Journal entry.
As you read more books, you'll continue using this same routine.
Eventually we'll move beyond the dog bones and begin writing in new and exciting ways.
But for now, we're building confidence, one chapter at a time.
Happy Reading!

Welcome to Mrs. Bee’s Library..
This is where you will find button that will lead you to Book Units you might like to read with your child. Don’t worry that they are not independently reading just yet, that will come with practice. I will add reading levels to help you choose books that may be less challenging. Henry and Mudge the First Book, is a fun one to start with so I have linked it below.
