How to Practice Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension can sometimes be difficult to teach. Children can become so focused on sounding out words and rushing to finish a book that they miss much of what the story is about. Sometimes they have even forgotten what happened in the beginning by the time they reach the end.

One of my favorite memories from my 24 years as an elementary classroom teacher was watching children become excited about reading chapter books.

The secret wasn't giving them harder books—it was giving them the confidence to understand what they were reading.

That's why I created Mrs. Bee's Reading Book Club—to help you and your child experience the same excitement I witnessed in my classroom. Each book study includes chapter-by-chapter comprehension booklets and a fun hands-on activity that brings the story to life. Each book study follows the same simple routine. As you and your child complete each story and the accompanying activities, your child will build reading confidence, strengthen comprehension skills, and create a

Reading Response Journal they'll be proud to look back on.

It's routine, routine, routine—that's where the magic happens. Sometimes the simplest routines produce the greatest growth.

Reading should be fun.

To get started, you'll need just a few simple supplies.

Supplies:

  • A composition notebook with primary (pre-primer) paper (available at Walmart for about $3.00 or amazon) I recommend one for you and one for your child.

  • A copy of the featured book.

  • The downloadable comprehension booklet.

  • The downloadable activity pages for that book.

  • A downloadable page of dog bones or other writing prompt when needed

  • Scissors, glue, and a pencil, ( and sometimes colored markers and or crayons)

The comprehension booklet is printed as a double copy. One copy is for you to model with your child, and one copy is for your child to complete. Learning together helps children become confident readers.

Feel free to put your own cute picture on the front. You could actually put a picture of your child on the front if you like.
