Follow the Polar Bears

Follow the Polar Bears is a nonfiction reader that teaches fascinating facts about polar bears and their cubs. As children read, they will discover how these amazing animals live, hunt, and survive in the Arctic. This unit helps build nonfiction reading skills while encouraging curiosity about the natural world

This book is different than the chapter books we have been reading so feel free to adjust this schedule to fit your family's needs. The goal is not to rush through the book but to enjoy reading to learn new information.

‍ ‍Day 1 – Do the Preview Page

Before reading, you might look through the pictures and talk about what you already know about polar bears. Ask your child what they think they might learn.

Read Follow the Polar Bears together. If your child is a beginning reader, read the book aloud. If your child is ready, take turns reading the pages together.

After reading, spend a few minutes talking about the new facts you learned.

Day 2 – Read Again & Think About the Facts

Cut out 3 fish for each person. Put a small number 1…2…3.. on each fish.

Re-read the book together, let your child it independently or take turn reading, or shadow read.

Complete the comprehension questions in this booklet.

Choose three interesting facts about polar bears. Write one fact on each fish

Talk together about the most interesting facts you discovered.

Day 3 – Work on your Reading Response Journal

Follow the direction for making your polar Bear in the direction section.

Write the Title of the book on the right side, then glue your fish under the title

Glue your polar bear on the left side of the book.

You can extend this by learning about other Artic animals.

Fiction builds imagination, while nonfiction builds knowledge about the world around them.
