All About My Name

A child’s name is personal, meaningful, and motivating. It is the perfect place to begin building letter recognition and early writing skills.

1. Name Puzzle (Daily 5-Minute Routine)

  • Create individual letters for each letter in your child’s name

  • Use a capital letter only for the first letter; all others should be lowercase

  • Place the letters in a small zip-lock bag

  • Each day, have your child put the letters in order, say each letter, then say the full name

2. Yarn Name Art

  • Write your child’s name large on an 8.5 x 11 horizontal paper (card stock is recommended)

  • Run a thin line of glue over each letter

  • Cover the letters with yarn in your child’s favorite color

  • Add a short note about what their name means or why it was chosen (This can be saved and added to a All About Me booklet that you could add special pages to as a keepsake)

3. Rainbow Writing

  • Write your child’s name large on a piece of paper

  • Choose 3–5 different crayon colors

  • Trace over each letter while saying each letter out loud

4. About Magnetic Letters

  • Use magnetic letters only if you have both uppercase and lowercase

  • Teach that capital letters are used at the beginning of important words like your name.

Do not use capitals in the middle of words

5. Independent Name Writing

  • Begin teaching your child to write their name independently

  • Celebrate effort even if letters are large or uneven at first
