All About My Name
A child’s name is personal, meaningful, and motivating. It is the perfect place to begin building letter recognition and early writing skills.
1. Name Puzzle (Daily 5-Minute Routine)
Create individual letters for each letter in your child’s name
Use a capital letter only for the first letter; all others should be lowercase
Place the letters in a small zip-lock bag
Each day, have your child put the letters in order, say each letter, then say the full name
2. Yarn Name Art
Write your child’s name large on an 8.5 x 11 horizontal paper (card stock is recommended)
Run a thin line of glue over each letter
Cover the letters with yarn in your child’s favorite color
Add a short note about what their name means or why it was chosen (This can be saved and added to a All About Me booklet that you could add special pages to as a keepsake)
3. Rainbow Writing
Write your child’s name large on a piece of paper
Choose 3–5 different crayon colors
Trace over each letter while saying each letter out loud
4. About Magnetic Letters
Use magnetic letters only if you have both uppercase and lowercase
Teach that capital letters are used at the beginning of important words like your name.
Do not use capitals in the middle of words
5. Independent Name Writing
Begin teaching your child to write their name independently
Celebrate effort even if letters are large or uneven at first
